Spring Cocktail Guide
It's time for BBQs and cocktails on the patio. The grass is green and lush, landscaping is sprouting and reaching toward the sun and buds are flowering everywhere. The pollen is down and the evenings are warm and breezy. This is my favorite time of the year to live in the backyard. I work out there during the day, and its the perfect spot to return for cocktails while we grill dinner. This year I planted 2 kinds of mint in small containers as our table scape on the dining table. Mint is so prolific, fresh, and lush and begs to be used in cocktails! Of course when you think spring and mint, you'd think Mint Juleps for the Kentucky Derby. Im not a bourbon and sweet person... I do love the Mint Julep cups though.
I lean towards the Gin Gin Mule. Ahhh. There is nothing like an icy cold copper mug with ginger beer, gin, lime, and fresh mint both muddled and as a garnish. I found a great local Ginger Beer source at the farmer's market. I go there weekly to fill our growlers with fresh brew. So far I like the spicy ginger & beet/carrot. Grocery store ginger beer works great too - but tends to have more refined sugar. Fresh limes and house mint makes the cocktail though. Add this baby to your spring cocktail list.
Gin Gin Mule
- 2 big mint sprigs
- 2-3 lime wedges
- 2 oz Gin
- 2.5 oz chilled ginger beer
Add 5-6 mint leaves to copper mug. Muddle gently. Fill your copper mug with ice cubes. Add Gin, squeeze 2 lime wedges, then top with ginger beer. Add additional mint & lime to garnish & to taste. Yum! So refreshing.
* Traditionally people add simple syrup. I don't like it that sweet, I love the freshness of the lime & mint and the sharpness of the ginger beer. Experiment. It's a crowd pleaser.
Substitutions: Vodka - Moscow Mule, Tequila - Mayan Mule, Rum - Jamaican Mule or Dark & Stormy
